Strategies VS Low & High Grade Players

There is endless room for tailoring strategies for specific players based on their calling/betting patterns, your knowledge about an individual player and the psychological situation at the time but there are two simple golden rules you should follow depending on whether you are playing against a weak or strong player.

  1. Against a low grade player: Make the obvious play. It is dangerous to get fancy when your in the pot with a weak player because subtle moves are beyond his imagination and understanding.
  2. Against a higher-grade player: Mix up your play. Against this type of player, you will need to mix up obvious and not so obvious plays. Generally though, you will need to out-play and out maneuver strong players in order to get ahead.

This is clearly illustrated in terms of bluffing. The strong aggressive player will often make the mistake of trying to out-play a weak player only to lose his chips. This does not make the low grade player un-bluffable but rather you need to make sure the bluff tells a very very clear and obvious story to have a chance at working.

Remember, against the bad player – “no tricks, no strategic play, nothing fancy. Play straightforward poker against a weak player” (Doyle Brunson, Super Systems 2).
